Take Aways
Take Aways
This section is intended to summarise key learnings.
•There is no magic bullet: The only path to good piano paying is plain old fashioned hard work.
•Relaxed and ready: Good playing will come only from a relaxed body and a ready mind.
This is very similar to the practice of a martial art or yoga.
•Focus: One has to be immersed into the piece being played in order to convey it’s musical meaning
•Look before you leap: Read the score before first playing it. Look for repetitions and themes. Watch for exchanges for between the right and left hands. Annotate as you go along. This will make things easier for the next take away.
•Play it again, Sam: During a practice session, sticking to one piece, (or part of piece) and playing it repeatedly increases comprehension and mastery more rapidly. Paying particular attention to the sections that cause most grief also help.
•Play it again, Sam ... with feeling: Now, being able to play (or plow) through a piece with the efficiency of a pianola is not likely to make for a memorable rendition. One has to step back for the written score and try to grasp the “essence” of the piece, adding feeling (play it from the soul, the gut, the heart, whatever... ) so that in the end, one can say: “Ya, I got this one right...I think”.
